The field of Slavic studies has experienced great changes, challenging numerous scholars in the area to reach out and make numerous interdisciplinary ties. The University encourages its students to connect literary study with various innovations in other disciplines, for example, social and intellectual history, performance and film studies, musicology, sociology, art history, anthropology, religious studies, and many others that already share literature’s investment in structure, narrativity, interpretation and communication. The Department greets theoretica and reflective work drawing on contemporary approaches and theories, but simultaneously stressing the historicity of these discourses as well as of the cultural phenomena that they set out to examine.

The Slavic Department enjoys cooperation with most of Columbia’s other institutes, departments and programs in the social sciences, humanities, and fine arts, comprising the Linguistics program, the W. Averell Harriman Institute, the East Central European Center, the Institute of Comparative Society and Literature, and the Institute for Research on Women and Gender. Students can work for the Institute’s Harriman Certificate and they are encouraged to do this. The program’s courses provide broader cultural, political and historical contexts for literature. The University give options for practical alternatives to academic career.
